Google Reader theme

Postby remko » 14 Mar 2013, 13:52

Hi,

since Google Reader will be discontinued, i think many people would love to see a Google Reader theme for tt-rss. This means changes like having a sans-serif font, website title and feed icon in front of the actual feed title and so on. Google Reader also has the behaviour to expand/collapse the news instead of creating a separate window.

Cheers,
remko

You can get the expand/collapse if you enable combined mode + disable expand articles automatically, one of those might be an advanced setting you need to enable a checkbox to show.

As for the theme, you can use user css functionality to style tt-rss however you want it.

Combined + turning off auto-expand works to expand feeds, but you can't click on the title and collapse them, unless I'm missing something.

If anyone have created a user css to simulate the Google Reader, please post it here. I think someone like me, found it useful.

It's actually a very simple patch to make it behave in this fashion.

You can edit the css in your preferences under "Settings" > "Surface". The Patch is a Diff File. You must change in /js/viewfeed.js the Code from
Code: Select all
      if (id == getActiveArticleId() && Element.visible(elem))
         return true;
to
Code: Select all
      if (id == getActiveArticleId() && Element.visible(elem)) {
           Element.hide(elem);
         Element.show("CEXC-" + getActiveArticleId());
         return;
      }

Hello,
I'm another user of Google Reader. I've installed tt-rss yesterday and I'm loving it so far. But I think that some UI improvements would make it better. Here are some suggestions:
    * add google reader style toolbar on top of the UI with most used features as a buttons/fields (like search, filters, labels etc.)
    * when I'm reading current news, right click on the title gives me option to mark previous as read. Can you add also option mark current record as unread?
    * possibility to mark *ALL* items in the feed as read (no only ones in the current screen)
Also there are some bugs that I found:
    * sometimes special category folder is not visible in the tree on the left
    * dragging categories around sometimes stuck and only full page refresh helps

Yay! If it isn't already headed that way, I suggest including this in the next release.

OK, maybe not quite yet, as there are some minor issues with this.

It makes clicking anywhere in the article display re-collapse the article. Mostly this might be OK, but one point where it's not so great is if the article has the "Attachments" button. It opens the attachments list and collapses the article, which results in a strange display.

Yeah it's because cdmClicked() is set on the whole content element, it could be changed to only act on excerpt/title link.

There's some "let's make it like greader" talk on G+ community, you can try mentioning it there too.

fox, thanks for these hints, your patch worked fine. One thing i am still missing from Google Reader's layout is having the website title on the left like in the screenshot i posted. I guess this would be just another minor change to feeds.php but i can't find out how.

Did you try this new option in version 1.7.4 : Group headlines in virtual feeds? I find it even more convenient than just adding the feed title.

You'll need to check Show additional preferences first.
